Description
June 22nd 1938 at Yankee Stadium, Bronx, New York, USA, Joe Louis defended his World Heavyweight Championship against Max Schmeling.
Louis floored Schmeling three times in round 1. On the third knock down referee Arthur Donovan took up the count when Schmeling’s trainer Max Machon threw the towel into the ring, which in European terms admits defeat for his fighter. The signal had been ignored in American boxing for years so Donovan picked up the towel and threw it out of the ring. When he returned to Schmeling lying motionless he could see counting was a waste of time, Schmeling was out cold so Donovan signaled the fight was over.
