Muhammad Ali unified the World Championship three times but he is four time’s WBA Champion, here’s the break down to help you understand for those who don’t know ….
Muhammad Ali won the WBC and WBA titles from Sonny Liston on February 25th 1964. Then because Muhammad agreed to give Liston a rematch against the WBA’s rules, they stripped him from their version of the title which I’m sure we all agree should not have happened.
On March 5th 1965 Ernie Terrell and Eddie Machen fought for the vacant WBA title, which Terrell won and became WBA Champion.
On May 25th 1965 Muhammad and Liston fought for the WBC title which was Muhammad’s first defence and won.
Muhammad didn’t get to fight Terrell until February 2nd 1967. After beating Terrell, Muhammad got back what was rightfully his in the first place, the WBA title. Unifying the Champion for a 2nd time.
Because of Muhammad’s refusal of going into the Vietnam War he was stripped from both titles and wasn’t able to fight again until 1970.
October 30th 1974, Muhammad beat George Foreman and became WBC and WBA Champion. This was the third time he won the WBA title.
On February 15th 1978, Muhammad lost the WBC and WBA Championship to Leon Spinks.
Spinks agreed to give Muhammad a rematch against the WBC’s rules. Spinks was stripped from the WBC title and it was given to Ken Norton which he lost on his first defence to Larry Holmes.
On September 15th 1978, Muhammad beat Leon Spinks and won back the WBA Championship. So Muhammad unified the Championship 3 times but won the WBA World Championship 4 times.
