Early in the first round, the World Heavyweight Champion Jersey Joe Walcott staggered Rocky Marciano with a short right hand, moments after he floored Marciano with a short powerful left hook. This was the first time Marciano had been on the canvas in his then 43-professional fight career. He got up but was bleeding from inside his mouth. Walcott dominated this round.
Going into the 13th round, Walcott was ahead by all three Judges. Marciano kept going forward driving Walcott on the back foot. As Walcott backed up towards the ropes he launched a right hand but Marciano caught him first with a crashing right to the jaw. Walcott went down while the referee Charley Daggert gave him the full count and Rocky Marciano became the Heavyweight Champion of the World.
